Applying for Graduate Study

The admissions process is highly competitive. Prospective MA or PhD students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with our faculty. We welcome applications from individuals whose academic interests match our expertise.

  • The application deadline for Fall admission is January 15 (Fall admissions only).

Prospective MA and PhD students must complete two separate applications:

1) UH Mānoa Graduate Division

Prospective students must complete the online application as provided by Graduate Division. All questions concerning the application and associated requirements should be directed to Graduate Division. There is an application fee.

2) Department of Anthropology

Prospective students must complete the online application as provided by the Department of Anthropology. All questions concerning the application and associated requirements should be directed to anthprog@hawaii.edu.

Applicants should direct their recommendation writers (at least three) to the Letter of Recommendation Form as provided by the Department of Anthropology.

Note: GRE scores are required. All non-native English speakers are required to take the TOEFL unless they have already received a degree from a college or university in an English speaking country. Minimum score requirements are 560/paper, 220/computer, or 100/Internet.
