Applying for Graduate Study

The admissions process is highly competitive. Prospective MA or PhD students are encouraged to familiarize themselves with our faculty. We welcome applications from individuals whose academic interests match our expertise.

  • The application deadline for Fall admission is December 1 (Fall admissions only).

Prospective MA and PhD students must complete two separate applications:

1) UH Mānoa Graduate Division

Prospective students must complete a UHM Graduate Division - Online Application. All questions concerning the application and associated requirements should be directed to Graduate Division. There is an application fee.

2) Department of Anthropology

Prospective students must complete a Departmental of Anthropology - Graduate Program Application. All questions concerning the application and associated requirements should be directed to anthprog@hawaii.edu.

GRE scores are not required at this time. If you have valid scores, you may submit them in your application. However, in lieu of the GRE, a writing sample is now required for both MA and PhD applicants. All non-native English speakers are required to take the TOEFL unless they have already received a degree from a college or university in an English speaking country. Minimum score requirements are 560/paper, 220/computer, or 100/Internet.

Applicants should direct their recommendation writers to complete a Department of Anthropology - Letter of Recommendation Form. Three letters are required.
